From the local paper - The Whitehaven News
LOCAL bands are lining up to play a full day music showcase for charity.
Rock 24/7 is becoming a regular annual event and it returns to the stage of Whitehaven Civic Hall on Saturday, January 20.
This will be the third consecutive year that it’s been held and the bands are giving their time for free.
Organisers Niall Paterson and Phil Rourke are both looking forward to another sell-out event. The two previous gigs attracted the venue’s capacity of 600 music fans. This year’s event is being twinned with Niall’s other fundraiser – the 2007 Peru Cycle Challenge – both in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
Confirmed to appear on the day are Skunk, Mazzoni, Novasmoke, Censored, Blind Mountain, Asezawallas, Sweet Zombie Jesus, Solway Delta Blues, Weathered Rock, Oven, Holocaus, The Wardrobe Monsters, A Lesser Concern and Ponse. Salamon, the close-up magician, will be in the audience entertaining throughout and there will be an acoustic room where Adam Amor will be playing sets at 6pm and 9pm and for anyone who wants to step up and jam on the day.
Phil and Niall thank the Civic Hall and, in particular, the bands who “make the event the success it’s been”.
“Again we are looking to donate around £2,500 to this year’s chosen charity.
“We all rely on organisations such as Macmillans when we need them most, it should not be forgotten that the care they provide is round the clock, so it’s quite right that we should support the very worthy cause,” said Phil, who will be performing in the band Sweet Zombie Jesus.
“It’s hopefully going to be another fantastic day, it’s like a festival and the atmosphere of the crowd in supporting local bands is second to none, they really do West Cumbria proud.” Tickets are on sale now, priced £6.50, from the box office on 01946 514960. The doors open at 4pm, with the first band on at 4.30pm and the final band taking to the stage at 10.45pm. The Solway and Dunboyne halls will both be used. As they both have bars, any under 18s will have to be accompanied by an adult.
